A beautiful and diverse hiking region in the middle of Germany. East- and West Harz, formerly divided by the German border, has many different landscapes to offer.
The mountains of the Harz were always known as a great spot for hiking tours. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Heinrich Heine and Hans Christian Andersen are only a few famous personalities that already appreciated the Harz mountains for their beauty a long time ago.
An extensive net of trails is taken care of mostly by the Harzclub e.V.
Also there are long distance trails (Harzer Hexenstieg, Baudensteig, Karstwanderweg and more) that offer beautiful hiking tours for a day.
Since 2006 is the “Harzer Wandernadel” a hiking badge that is given in over 222 spots.
Medieval castles and half-timbering towns, hundreds of canals, lakes and ponds for the mines plus the typical wooden Harz houses are part of the cultural heritage of this region.
The Harz, that was called “Hart” (mountain forest) until medieval times, is the highest mountain range of northern Germany and is located between Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The Brocken is the highest mountain in the Harz with 1.141 m.
The national park was founded in 2006 as the first transnational park in Germany and is made out of the national park in Lower Saxony and the one in Saxony-Anhalt, that existed before.
Adventurous experiences in the Harz mountains and the surrounding are offered by specialized tour operators. Canyoning, trekking with donkeys, survival and new sports like tubing can be booked.
The Harz is as the northernmost ski area Germany's are perfect spot for mountain biking and cross-country skiing.
